south india discoveries- 7 days

A practical‑luxury 7‑day journey through Tamil Nadu’s coast and temple heartland, with a private car and driver, heritage stays and an easy, unhurried pace.

This is a sample quiet‑luxury itinerary for families and older couples. We’ll tailor the pacing, hotel choices and experiences to your interests, mobility and travel dates.

Day 1 – Arrive in Chennai

Arrive in Chennai and settle into a comfortable city hotel. Depending on arrival time, explore the old quarters, Marina Beach or a local cafe, keeping the day light after your flight.

Approximate travel distances (by road):

  • Chennai → Mahabalipuram: ~60 km / 1.5–2 hours
  • Mahabalipuram → Pondicherry: ~100 km / 2–2.5 hours
  • Pondicherry → Kumbakonam / Thanjavur: ~170–200 km / 4–5 hours
  • Kumbakonam / Thanjavur → Chettinad (Karaikudi region): ~220–250 km / 5–6 hours
  • Chettinad → Madurai: ~90–120 km / 2–3 hours
Day 2 – Chennai to Mahabalipuram & Pondicherry – coast & carvings

Drive down the East Coast Road toward Mahabalipuram, stopping to explore the UNESCO‑listed shore temples and rock‑cut monuments. Continue along the coast to Pondicherry and check into a quiet‑luxury heritage hotel in the French Quarter. Stroll along the seafront promenade in the evening and dine at a stylish bistro.

Day 3 – Pondicherry – colonial charm at an easy pace

Spend the day soaking up Pondicherry at a relaxed tempo: cafe‑hopping, boutique shopping and wandering the leafy streets of the French and Tamil quarters. Optionally visit nearby Auroville for a short, curated visit. Return to your hotel for a slow evening and refined South Indian cuisine.

Day 4 – Pondicherry to Kumbakonam / Thanjavur – the temple heartland

Leave the coast and drive inland towards Kumbakonam or Thanjavur, checking into a characterful heritage stay such as a restored mansion or small estate. In the afternoon, visit the Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur or explore smaller, quieter temples and village life around Kumbakonam.

Day 5 – Kumbakonam / Thanjavur to Chettinad – mansions & cuisine

Drive south to the Chettinad region, known for its palatial mansions and distinctive cuisine. Stay in a lovingly restored Chettinad home or boutique heritage property. Spend the afternoon wandering through sleepy lanes, visiting a local tile or hand‑craft workshop, and enjoying a long, leisurely Chettinad dinner.

We plan each journey around comfort — especially for families and older couples — building in unhurried drives and generous time at every stop.

Day 6 – Chettinad to Madurai – city of temples

Head to Madurai and check into a comfortable hotel not far from the temple area. In the late afternoon or evening, visit Meenakshi Amman Temple, ideally with a private guide, to experience the evening rituals and the glow of the temple complex after dark.

Day 7 – Madurai – morning at leisure & depart

Enjoy a relaxed morning, perhaps revisiting the bazaar lanes or the temple area briefly. Depending on your flight, transfer to Madurai airport for your onward journey (or connect by air to Chennai or Bengaluru).
