Hills & Highlands – Assam, Meghalaya & Darjeeling
A gentle 7‑day journey linking Assam, Meghalaya and the Eastern Himalaya, designed with families and older couples in mind – balancing scenic drives, comfortable stays and soft adventure.
This itinerary is a framework that can be refined to suit your pace, interests and comfort.
Day 1 – Arrive in Guwahati
Arrive in Guwahati and meet your private driver for the 45–60 minute transfer (around 20–25 km) into the city. Settle into your hotel and ease into the Northeast with a gentle afternoon by the Brahmaputra – perhaps a short temple visit if you wish, or simply a relaxed sunset cruise with tea and snacks on deck. In the evening, enjoy dinner at the hotel or a hand‑picked local restaurant, perfect for families and older couples looking for a soft landing.
Day 2 – Guwahati → Shillong (Meghalaya Highlands)
After a leisurely breakfast, leave the plains behind on a scenic 3–4 hour drive (around 100–120 km) into the hills of Meghalaya. Pine forests, viewpoints and small villages line the route as you make your way to Shillong, where you check into a boutique or resort‑style hotel. Spend the rest of the day at an easy pace – perhaps a stroll around Ward’s Lake, a café stop or simply enjoying the cool air and views from your hotel.
Day 3 – Shillong & Cherrapunji Day Excursion
Today is a full but flexible day out to Cherrapunji (Sohra), around 2–2.5 hours each way by road (about 55–60 km in each direction). With your private car and driver, you stop at sweeping valley and waterfall viewpoints, gardens and easy walking spots that suit both children and older travellers. Instead of strenuous treks, we focus on gentle, view‑based experiences and photo stops, returning to Shillong by late afternoon for a relaxed evening.
Day 4 – Shillong → Guwahati → Fly to Bagdogra → Kalimpong
This morning you drive back down to Guwahati Airport (around 3–4 hours / 100–120 km) in time for your short flight to Bagdogra in North Bengal (around 1–1.5 hours’ flying time). On arrival, a private car whisks you into the foothills on a 3–4 hour drive (approximately 75–80 km) to Kalimpong, a quieter hill station surrounded by orchids and tea gardens. Check into a heritage or boutique property with gardens and views, and unwind with sunset over the hills followed by a cosy dinner.
Day 5 – Kalimpong Monasteries & Gardens → Darjeeling
Start the day with a gentle exploration of Kalimpong – a monastery visit, time in lush nurseries and gardens, and a browse for local crafts and textiles, all at an easy pace. In the afternoon, continue by road to Darjeeling (around 2.5–3 hours / 50–60 km), climbing steadily with ever‑wider mountain views. Your base here is a colonial‑era tea bungalow or elegant hill hotel, where you arrive in time for a pot of Darjeeling tea on the terrace.
Day 6 – Tea Country & Toy Train in Darjeeling
Wake to cool mountain air and, if you wish, an optional early run to Tiger Hill for sunrise over Kanchenjunga. After a late breakfast, enjoy a short ride on the Toy Train, followed by a guided visit to a nearby tea estate where you walk the gentler paths and learn how the “champagne of teas” is made. The rest of the day is yours to dip into Darjeeling’s highlights – the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, the zoo, or simply a slow stroll along the Mall Road for tea, cake and souvenir shopping. Local drives are kept short and flexible, usually 20–40 minutes at a time.
Day 7 – Darjeeling → Bagdogra → Fly to Kolkata
After breakfast, a 3–4 hour drive (around 70–75 km) brings you back down to Bagdogra Airport, with time for scenic photo stops along the way. From here, fly to Kolkata (around 1–1.5 hours’ flying time) for your onward journey or an optional city extension, where culture, history and riverfront walks await. Families and older couples can choose to continue their India adventure in the city, or connect straight onto their international flight home.
